Another reason for thatching in your lawn may be the practice of cutting high grass at frequent intervals of time, leaving behind its clippings on the lawn. Although thatching is not always a bad thing in the lawn as it is a means of holding moisture and preventing the shortage of water in the lawn. It also protects the lawn from extreme heat.

But in case of excessive thatching it becomes important to remove them from the lawn. This process of removing thatches from the lawn is known as de thatching. The process of de thatching has to be carried out when the thatches in the lawn increases. Thatching can be harmful from the point of insects in the lawn. Excessive thatching in the lawn can promote insect growth and other lawn diseases.

de thatching can be carried out in three ways depending upon the size of the lawn and the number of thatches present in the lawn. The first and the most effective method of de thatching is aeration. This method of removing thatching is good for the lawns that have thatches smaller than an inch. Aeration can be carried out using an aerator. It is recommended that the aerator should be such that is able to pull the plugs form the soil in contrast to the aerators that poke holes.

The next effective method of de thatching is to manually rake the lawn. Raking of the lawn can be done with the help of garden rake, leaf rake or with the help of thatching rake. This method of de thatching is suggested for small and medium sized lawns that have thatches lesser than one inch. In case where the thatch is more than one inch a power rake can be used. Use of a power rake for de thatching makes your job easy.
